Apple iOS 9, when rolled out few weeks ago, did come with its share of bugs. To address those bugs and some improvements in overall functionality, Apple has started rolling out the iOS 9.1 update. It’s a major maintenance update that also brings new features such as intelligent Live Photos and over 150 new emoji characters.
After releasing iOS 9, Apple had released an incremental iOS 9.0.1 with fixes to problems users complained, such as crashes in setup assistant, timers and alarms failing to play, loss of cellular data network. There was another iOS 9.0.2 update that fixed issues with iCloud backup and iMessage activation.
Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus users had also complained of problems related to the touchscreen not responding and app installs getting stuck. However, it is not clear whether these issues have been fixed with iOS 9.1.
The update is roughly 187MB in size, but varies based on the Apple device that you own. For instance, the update for iPhone 6s Plus is roughly around 331MB.
The update is available to download over-the-air or via iTunes. The iOS 9.1 update is compatible with iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus; fifth and sixth generations iPod touch and all iPads except the first-generation model. You can install the update via OTA (Over-The-Air) by heading over to Settings > General > Software update and manually check. Once the update is downloaded and installed, your device will automatically reboot.
Alternatively, you can also connect your Apple device to a computer using a data cable, start iTunes and click on check for updates. To be on a safer side, we advise you to take backup of your data before updating to the latest OS. Also note, after the update is complete, your device may take a while to reboot.
Do note - The iOS 9.1 update also kills the jailbreak that was recently released by Pangu. So, if you don’t want to lose jailbreak, it would be better not to install the iOS 9.1 update.
