Apple has officially announced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus at its event in Flint Center for the Performing Arts Cupertino California, where Steve Jobs first introduced the original Macintosh 30 years ago.
Announced on stage by Apple's CEO Tim Cook, the iPhone 6 is the latest iteration in the iPhone series and for only the second time in its history it's getting bigger - twice!
"Today we are launching the biggest advancement in the history of the iPhone" said Tim Cook.
As rumored much before the event there are two sizes, 4.7-inch and 5.5-inches. The smaller phone has a 1334x750 resolution display while the iPhone 6 Plus has a full HD, 1920x1080 display for a ppi of 326 and 401 respectively. The screen is protected by "Ion-strengthened glass", which is curved around the edges for a more seamless experience when swiping.
The iPhone 6 is powered by a second-generation chipset, the Apple A8. It offers 20% more CPU power and 50% GPU oomph. The chipset is built on a power-efficient 20nm process, which also makes it 13% smaller physically than its A7 predecessor. A8 chipset is supported by the new M8 motion coprocessor which can now estimate distance, elevation, flight of staires. It is also equipped with new Barometer sensor which estimates relative elevation from air pressure.
LTE radio of the iPhone 6 supports upto 20 different LTE bands more than any other smartphone, provides faster download upto 150 Mbps. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus support Wi-Fi calling which can have seamlessly transition to cellular.
The chassis is made of anodized aluminum with a stainless steel Apple logo. The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick while the iPhone 6 Plus goes up just slightly to 7.1mm.
Apple said despite the new resolution, apps will "just work" thanks to a desktop-class scaler. This will only be needed until devs update their apps to support the new resolution.
Round the back the camera protrudes slightly from the body which is a 8MP iSight camera unit supported by a True Tone flash. Camera sensor is 1.5μ pixel unit with f/2.2 aperture. iPhone 6 camera comes with advanced noise reduction and A8 Image Signal processor. Additional features are blink and smile detection. In addition to before mentioned features iPhone 6 Plus camera unit is also supported by Optical Image Stabilization.
Camera units can capture 1080p videos are 30fps or 60fps, slow motion videos can be captured at 240fps.
iPhone 6 has been prices at $199, 299, $399 for 16, 64GB and 128GB on 2 year contract. Customers need to pay $100 more for the iPhone 6 Plus for respective variants. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both will be available in silver, gold and black.
iPhone 6 will be available from September 19, 2014 in US, France, Hong Kong, Canada, Germany, Singapore, UK, Australia and Japan. Rest of the world have to wait for end of 2014.
Apple also announced that the iPhone 5S will be available now at $99 phone, and the iPhone 5C is the new free model.
