Windows 8.1 Update Tweaked For Mouse-And-Keyboard Users, Arriving April 8th As An Automatic Download

Microsoft has announced the first update to Windows 8.1, which comes with new features, an improved enterprise mode and a revamped UI to offer better user experience. Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore said that the Windows 8.1 update is mainly designed for users who still prefer using mouse and keyboard over touch. The Windows 8.1 Update will be available for users starting from April 8; however, the developers’ version will be released sooner than that.

The Windows 8.1 update is consistent with earlier leaks. So as expected, it will allow the PC to boot or resume straight to the desktop. The OS will now be able to identify what device you are using and adjust accordingly. So if you are on a tablet, it will open the touch-centric “Metro” mode, and if you are on a PC, it will now launch straight to desktop.

Microsoft has brought back the taskbar, wherein you can switch between modern and legacy Windows apps. Also making a return are features like minimize and maximizing a window using the mouse as well as the ability to right click to open a context menu within the Live Tiles. In addition to the OS, the Windows Store too has been revamped to make it more keyboard and mouse friendly and will now be  pinned to the taskbar.

For developers, Microsoft will provide documentations to update their apps with support for mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft also talked about an Enterprise Mode integrated within Internet Explorer 11. This mode will help run older websites which would earlier not work well on the Internet Explorer. This will be useful in the enterprise segment as big companies generally use older websites internally.

Lastly, Microsoft also announced the Universal Apps initiative, which will essentially allow developers to make apps that can work across both Windows 8.1 as well as Windows Phone 8.1. In other words, developers will be able to create apps that will be able to work across computers, laptops and smartphones.
