According to some rumors Xiaomi’s next Mi 5 smartphone will be featuring ultra sonic fingerprint reader. This fingerprint scanning technology is currently being developed by Qualcomm and is said to be different from the conventional fingerprint reader on the phones. According to rumors, Qualcomm will be rolling out the technology (currently named Snapdragon Sense ID) by end of this year.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader uses a 3D map of your fingerprint rather 2D scans used on phones from Samsung, Apple and others. It is believed that this technology will ensure more accurate scanning as well as be more secure. Report suggest the scanner will work even when fingers are wet. The technology is expected to be part of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820. More devices running Snapdragon 820 are expected to be available starting next year. If rumors are true, the Mi 5 featuring Qualcomm’s next generation fingerprint reader and processor will be available by end of this year or perhaps early next year.
Other rumoured of specifications of the phone include a Quad HD display, 16-megapixel rear camera and 13-megapixel front facing camera, USB type C and 3000 mAh battery. The phone is likely to be competitively priced around $400.
Fingerprint technology is gradually becoming mainstream on flagship and mid-range smartphones. It is also getting increasingly popular among users for whom privacy and security are top concern. Moreover, brands are expanding usage of the technology for payments.
Mobile manufacturers are working to ramp up fingerprint scanners in order to make it more secure and accurate. Internet is flooded with stories where hackers have managed to breach the fingerprint scanners. This is perhaps why Qualcomm and others are at work to make the technology more foolproof.
