Uber has brought its carpooling service, called UberPOOL, to India. It allows users to split fares with another person who happens to be requesting a ride along a similar route, by sharing a ride together. This carpooling initiative has been kicked off in Bangalore in beta mode, and depending upon the feedback, it will be rolled out in other cities.

The UberPOOL service already exists in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Austin and Paris. The company claims that the fare would be so low, that the customer would find it more expensive to own and maintain their own personal car.
This feature is optional, and customers can always choose not to share a ride and split the fare. You get an option called POOL added to the app, and on clicking it, the app matches riders heading in the same direction. The app will only add two riders per trip, and while it slightly increases the travel time, the company claims that it reduces price by up to 50 percent. The video below gives a step-by-step guide on how UberPOOL works.
The country currently has many carpooling services in India including Zify, BlaBlaCar, iBibo Ryde, Pool My Ride and Carpool India. Meru Cabs is one of the recent entrants in this space. Uber, with its widespread presence in the country and customer base, will give tough competition to all these companies.

Uber was launched in India two years ago, and has introduced many India-centric features since then to stay relevant in the country. It is the second largest market for the company after the US, with operations in 22 cities.
The company had to even change business strategy, after the RBI weighed down on it, and made two-factor authentication a mandate. The company has since then, introduced a slew of safety measures, and has even recently introduced cash payments as they still continue to be a popular mode of payment in India.
