Facebook Launched Slingshot, Snapchat Like Messaging App For Android & iOS In US

Facebook has officially launched the Slingshot app for Android and iOS users in the US. The app is basically similar to Snapchat with its ephemeral functionality, but Facebook has added its own twist to it.

First off the similarities — Slingshot lets you send photos or short 15 seconds videos to your friends, and the moment they see what you have sent, the app automatically deletes it. But here’s the difference — unlike Snapchat, in order to see what your friend has shared, you will first need to share something with him or her. The Slingshot team explains the logic behind this functionality.

“With Slingshot, we wanted to build something where everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator. When everyone participates, there’s less pressure, more creativity and even the little things in life can turn into awesome shared experiences. This is what Slingshot is all about.”

So rather than a messaging app like say Facebook’s own Messenger, Slingshot is more like a ‘News Feed’, where you have to unlock the content you want to view. It will be interesting to see how users take to Slingshot’s ‘incentivized sharing’ functionality.

As mentioned above, Slingshot is only available in the US for now. But there’s no word on when the app will be released in other countries, including India.
