Over the coming days, Google will roll out an update to Chrome for Android and iOS devices that will introduce data compression feature similar to what Opera Mini offers, to save on data costs while surfing the Internet on a cellular data connection. Google is promising up to 50 percent savings in data usage, which could reduce one’s data costs significantly.
Users will be able to enable this feature by going into “Settings” > “Bandwidth management” > “Reduce data usage” and turning the toggle on. Google implements this by creating a connection to a SPDY proxy that is running on Google’s servers. The connection between the device and the proxy is over SSL for security purposes. All traffic to HTTPS sites is routed directly rather than the proxy to maintain security.
The SPDY proxy does all the DNS lookup and also compresses images from JPEG and GIF formats to WebP, which requires fewer bytes to transfer. Users will be able to see data savings from the Chrome app settings.
Apart from data compression, the new Chrome app will also bring Google’s Translate feature to iOS, which was so far available only for Android. For Android users, this app will finally enable users to create a shortcut to a website on the home page.
